Destiny Shift with the Virgo Lunar Eclipse

Within and around you, the first lunar eclipse in Virgo in 17 years is coming alive.  All day, the Moon has been  99.99% full -- and ever since she entered Virgo yesterday, she’s been attuning you to an imperative that’s been gathering steam since February 2008.  In the last century, no other part of the zodiac has gone so long without a lunar eclipse.  No part of your birth chart has waited so long for the potentially life-changing clearing and release that comes with this most powerful of full moons.

A total lunar eclipse is a time-bend in the Deep Mind -- one that stretches far beneath your conscious awareness to your dreaming intelligence and the subatomic space where your atoms float. When the Moon dives deep into the Earth’s shadow as the Sun floods her with light, she changes before our eyes. From full, she wanes into the rust red darkness – and then waxes into fullness. A journey that normally takes 29 ½ days unfolds in just a few hours.

The transformation your outer eyes witness is fully received by those vast, fertile spaces deep within. In those infinite and invisible skies, old realities loosen, dissolve, and release. Almost always, something connected to the part of your birth chart where the eclipse occurs comes to an end. Sometimes you can feel it as it happens. At other times, it’s as subtle and silent as the Moon herself. Sometimes it happens in an instant. At others, it takes months.

However it happens, this one has “destiny shift” written all over it.  First, there’s all that’s happened since an eclipse happened in your Virgo house.  In 2008, Pluto had just come to Capricorn. His 16-year reality-transforming mission had barely begun. Now it’s over.

What’s happened in your Virgo house in those 17 years, as reality was squeezed and transformed, over and over again? As the global financial markets crashed, the Arab Spring occurred, Covid swept the planet, and reality was forever transformed? What's still not yet integrated or digested? What are you ready to let go of? What needs healing? Virgo is the sign where this happens -- and we reclaim our wholeness as we bring heaven and earth into an ever-new alignment in ourselves, just as we are -- as essential parts of a fractal Cosmos.

That last Virgo lunar eclipse was the first after Pluto entered Capricorn. This one is the first after he’s completed his transition into Aquarius, and begins a new transformative mission – to regenerate our relationship with humanity, and the human future.  We’ll have three more Virgo lunar eclipses before he leaves – a total of four major releases, each with the potential to take your life to a new level. But for that to happen, it's essential to digest tour experience and realign with tour truths.

Two of those four Virgo lunar eclipses are coming in the next two years. They’ll be supporting you in staying grounded and responsive as the four giant planets complete the sign changes that are about to begin in just two and half weeks – bringing an energy shift so extraordinary in scope and scale that nothing like it  has occurred in thousands of years (it’s so rare that no one I know or follow is sure exactly when this last happened).

Tonight is your invitation to let go of what might be keeping you from being ready and willing to ride the most radical, massive wave of change you’ve ever experienced.  That could be a lot of things. Fear could be one. Grief could be another. Exhaustion, Trauma that you’ve been carrying for 17 years – or longer. The call of destiny could be another – a destiny to be part of the global awakening to the human future that your presence on the Earth at this time strongly suggests you took birth for. That, too, needs to be deeply received and integrated.

Whatever it is, it's really, really important to listen to it -- and respond in a way that empowers you.

Virgo, Venus, and the power of owning your truth.

As it turns out, that’s exactly the ancient superpower of Virgo. The only woman – in fact, the only human – in the zodiac has been seen as a virgin since astrology’s beginnings in Sumer five thousand years ago.  But that’s not what she was first called by the people who invented writing, cities, the wheel, and the zodiac at the beginning of this civilization. They knew her as Ab Sin – the Moon God’s Daughter. Her name, Inanna, was the first one given to Earth’s sister planet, Venus.

Inanna’s story, written 5,000 years ago, speaks as directly to our Now moment as any I know. Like many, many women in the world today, she lived a life of great privilege and luxury. Her status made her special and precious. Yet she was fundamentally disempowered, living by rules that were not of her making and subjected to rape and emotional abuse, like her mother and her sister before her.

When her mother was disappeared – taken prisoner by her own father-in-law – she sent a message to Inanna. Go visit your sister. The young princess had never met her sister. In those days at the dawn of this civilization, the Underworld was ruled not by a god but by a goddess – who was Inanna’s sister.

In a moment that shocked the palace, the Moon God’s daughter announced she was setting off to visit Erishkegal – in a place from which no one had ever returned. Inanna, though, did return – forever changed by what happened to her in the underworld. Completely shattered, she died to an old way of existing, and re-membered herself in a new, edgier, and far more empowered way.

Inanna's story -- the oldest and still the most daring in the Universe

This story of two sisters, one a queen of the visible world, another of the invisible Underworld, is among the oldest ever written on our planet, chronicling what remains sone of the most daring quests in this civilization -- a woman's quest for empowerment on her own terms and for the benefit of all beings. It’s a founding story of civilization, told by Sumerian astrologers to explain what was happening to Inanna when she disappeared from the sky every nineteen months.

Each time I read Emily H. Wilson’s brilliant re-telling, in her novel Inanna, of the story engraved on clay tablets dug from the desert sands of what is now Iraq, I realize more deeply that this is not only the foundational story of civilization – it’s also a map for this Now moment. We, too, find ourselves in a world not of our making.  You, too, are experiencing a shattering of old identities and expectations – and at this eclipse, you're being invited to re-member yourself in a far more empowered and empowering way, just as Venus did, when she was known as Inanna.

Rewriting history starts right here

And at today’s lunar eclipse, Venus is retrograde and on her way to the Underworld. And she’s in Aries, the sign of beginnings and of the one who goes first.  Every Venus retrograde can reshape your life, but this one is one for the record books:

  • A week from Saturday – on March 22, two days after the Equinox – Venus will conceive the seed of a new and never- before way to embody love when she conjoins the Aries Sun in 2’ Aries – tightly conjunct the Degree of Creation, 0’ Aries. Then she'll return to the Pisces waters with her potent new seed, to infuse it with the magical powers of compassion, dreams, and mystic inspiration.

  • Two days after that, on March 24, it will be Mercury's turn to receive a new and trailblazing way to see -- and then he will follow Venus into Pisces.

  • On March 29, Luna will move across the face of the Aries Sun and bring the destiny re-set with a beginning that is a solar eclipse.

  • The next day, on March 30, Neptune will enter 0' Aries, the Degree of Creation and the anchor degree of the World Axis, bringing a new dream for humanity into the world -- and your life. It will be the first time in 164 years the Great Blue Dreamer has entered the zodiac’s first sign, and in the three months and one week that follow, the other three giant, reality-shaping planets will also cross the borders between the signs where they’ve been for anywhere from 3 to 14 years.

In no sign is Venus retrograde quite so resonant with Inanna's daring -- and reality-changing –  transformative journey to the Underworld than in Aries. Here is where we‘re willing to go first, to be alone, and to break ground that is truly new.  The skies are telling us, that it’s both possible – and necessary. As we move through the world-shaking two weeks (and 10 years) ahead, this will only become more and more clear.

The inside-out path to a new reality

The path the astrology points to is one that unfolds from inside out. It starts not out there -- but within. 2025 began with the retrogrades of the three planets closest to Earth – known as the “personal” planets. We’ve just finished reconfiguring our drive and our agency three and a half weeks ago, when Mars brought his retrograde to a close in the sign of the emotions. Venus now in the midst of reconfiguring, our values and our love into a more trailblazing form. And on Saturday – the day after the eclipse – our tiny Messenger planet will station retrograde. Until April 8, he’ll be right behind Venus, translating what she’s showing you into new perceptions. They’ll both be moving through a fully live eclipse field.
